If you missed the compelling American Experience documentary "Freedom Riders" that premiered this week on PBS, you can still watch it online or order the DVD at this PBS webpage.
I can't urge you enough to do so! This film documents and describes the experiences of the young activists called the Freedom Riders who braved mob violence, state-sanctioned police violence, and jail time when they challenged segregation, state by state, in the 1961 American South.
When Liberty Hill supporter Ralph Fertig brought his fellow Freedom Rider veterans Robert and Helen Singleton to speak to today's generation of community organizers at a fall 2010 session of the Leadership Institute, listeners were inspired and galvanized by the memories shared. Read the blog post about that event, written by Liberty Hill staffer Kristen Aladana-Taday, who reflects on the Freedom Riders' incredible acts of personal bravery in the fight for justice. (That blog post also contains links with some background information.)
Thank you once again, Ralph, for bringing this film and this history to our attention and congratulations on being honored by the Progressive Jewish Alliance at next Thursday's Living the Legacy Dinner.
