I am pleased to announce that effective July 5, Shane Murphy Goldsmith has been promoted to Vice President/Chief Program Officer of Liberty Hill. The leadership of Liberty Hill’s Board of Directors joins me in congratulating Shane.
In her two years at Liberty Hill, Shane has redesigned Liberty Hill's grantmaking program and launched the Wally Marks Leadership Institute for Change. We look forward with enthusiasm to her expanded leadership contributions.
Shane, who has been Director of Programs at Liberty Hill came to us with an impressive background that includes experience in several sectors. She was Executive Director of PATH Ventures, an L.A.-based affordable housing development agency. Prior to that, she served on L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti’s staff for four years overseeing field and legislative projects. She also ran the Council District 13 Leadership Institute. She was a member of Liberty Hill’s Lesbian and Gay Community Funding Board from 2007 to 2008.
Shane was born and raised in Santa Monica, California. After graduating from Kenyon College in Ohio with a degree in Sociology and Religion, she spent a year as a Congressional Hunger Fellow managing a homeless shelter and doing federal policy research in Indiana and Washington, D.C. Back in L.A., she did community organizing and policy advocacy with several organizations including the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and the Center for Community Change. She received her master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration at California State University Long Beach; her thesis was on leadership development.
In her new position, Shane will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of Liberty Hill programs that directly support movement building and organizing, including the Wally Marks Leadership Training Institute, the Fund for Change, and collaborations with community organizations under Common Agenda. In addition, her scope of work will include oversight of Liberty Hill operations and finance departments.
Shane lives on the Westside with her wife Monica, their son Jude Santiago, their foster daughter, and two pug dogs and cat.
